MapMart Mobile is an application that allows a user to search for commercially available satellite imagery available from the top sources in the industry. A user can search imagery for any location using a simple interface by name or through an interactive map. Once a site has been defined, a list of images and metadata for the area is displayed.
Starting the Application (iOS and Android):
Tap the MapMart Mobile icon to start the application. Once the application has loaded, the initial screen will be displayed.
Changing the Base Map:
MapMart Mobile offers three base maps to enable the user to select according to different visible features. The icon looks like a folded map in the center of the lower tool bar. The choices are: Satellite, Street and Hybrid. *Changing the Base Map will not affect the imagery search results or the final product.
The Satellite view will display a “picture” image of the area on the map.
The Street view will display a street type of map with labels of major features.
The Hybrid view will display a satellite view with labels of major features.
Finding a location:
There are three ways of finding a location with this application. The first is the Search tool at the top of the screen.
Tap within the Search box and enter the name, address or coordinates of the desired location. Tap the Search button on the bottom right to display a list of matching locations.
Tap the selection from the list of search results that best fits the desired location. The map will zoom to that location and display a red push pin.
To clear the selected location, tap on the red pin. A label for the location will appear. Tap the information (i) button on the right side of the label. This will allow a user to delete the current location. Performing another search using the Search box will clear the previous location as well.
The second way of finding a location is by using the GPS icon (the circle crosshairs on the bottom right of the application). The user will be notified that the current map view will change. If Yes is selected to accept the change, the application will zoom to the device’s current location, displaying a blue glowing dot. A user can remove this by tapping the GPS icon again.
The third way of getting to a map location is by tapping on the map or using two fingers to zoom to a location. Quickly tapping the screen at a certain location will zoom in toward that point. Alternatively, a user can touch the screen with two fingers and spread them apart to zoom into the location touched on the screen.
The tools menu item has two features; a Measure Area tool and a Measure Distance tool. The Wrench icon contains these tools.
Selecting Measure Area, the user will be prompted to tap on the map to place points. A minimum of three points must be placed on the map to create a polygonal area to measure. The area of the polygon will be displayed in both square kilometers and square miles. Once the area of the polygon has been displayed in the upper part of the screen, the user may click X to Redraw or Clear the current polygon.
To measure a distance, the user selects the Measure Distance tool. Once this tool is selected, the user will tap on the screen to place points and draw a line. A minimum of two points are used to measure the distance in both kilometers and miles.
Once the length of the line has been displayed in the upper part of the screen, the user may click X on the upper left part of the screen to Redraw another line or Clear the current line.
Defining the Area of Interest (AOI)
To view available imagery from MapMart Mobile, an Area of Interest (AOI) must be defined. There are two ways to create an AOI, by Polygon or Box. Each of these tools can be accessed by selecting the Pencil icon on the bottom left of the application screen. Selecting Cancel will return the user to the map view.
The Polygon tool allows the user to create an AOI with a polygon containing a minimum of three points. Once an appropriate polygon has been created, the user can select Clear, which will allow the user to Redraw the AOI or Clear the polygon, or Search which will search the MapMart Mobile databases for the available imagery options for the AOI. Tapping Cancel will close the selection menu display. The AOI size is also displayed in both square miles and square kilometers.
The Box tool allows the user to define a rectangular AOI by tapping each of the two diagonal corners on the map to define the extents of the AOI. Once a box is created, the Clear and the Search buttons are available, along with a display of the area of the box in both square miles and square kilometers.
Once the AOI is defined, the user taps the Search button in the upper right. This generates a list of the available image scenes for the AOI. The most relevant details of each image are displayed, including the date the image was captured, the resolution of the imagery, the percentage of cloud cover, the percentage of the AOI covered by the image and the imagery mode.
The user has the ability to modify the Scenes search results by tapping Filter in the lower right of the application screen. The default search criteria returns results with 50% or lower cloud cover, resolution up to 20 meters per pixel in all imagery modes and for all available years.
The user can change the order of the search results by tapping the options below the Sort By header. The user can sort by:
• Year (Newest or Oldest first)
• Resolution (Highest or Lowest first)
• AOI Coverage (Descending or Ascending)
• Cloud Cover (Descending or Ascending)
In the Min AOI Coverage filter, the user can define the minimum amount of coverage of the AOI required for an image to be included in the search results. (If a single date of coverage is required, a user would choose 100% as the minimum to display only those images that completely cover the AOI.)
The Max Cloud Cover filter allows the user to select the maximum percentage of cloud cover allowed in the search results. (A user requiring cloud-free coverage would select 0% cloud cover as the maximum.)
The Resolution filter allows the user to select a range of scene resolutions with a minimum on the left dial and the maximum on the right dial. (The smaller the resolution, the more detail the imagery will deliver.)
The Image Mode selection can be set to search for Color imagery, Black & White imagery or both.
To define a smaller date range, the user can slide the green button to the right of the All Years section. This will open an area that the user will be able to define the newest and oldest acceptable yeas of imagery.
Once the options have been adjusted, tap the Apply button in the upper right part of the screen to re-filter and re-sort the Scenes results. (Tap the Cancel button on the upper left part of the screen to return to the original Results page without applying any new filters.)
To obtain details about an image, tap a line item in the list of Scenes available. This will display more detailed information regarding the selected image.
The following map will display the scene overlay and its relationship to the AOI. The AOI will be displayed in red on the map. The base map can be changed by selecting the Street, Base Image or Hybrid view on the top menu bar. (***The Base Image and Hybrid base maps do not include the requested imagery. These are only reference maps to confirm the extents of the scene and the AOI.) If at any time the map needs to be refreshed to the initial settings, tap the circular arrow to the left of the base map settings.
Tap Add to Cart at any time to submit include that image as part of the request to the MapMart Mobile Support Team. Tap Yes to return to the list of available images. A user can also view additional details prior to selecting the image. Tap No to continue looking at the image details.
To obtain more advanced information regarding the scene, tap the Details button on the top right of the application screen.
Within this screen, the Basic Details of the Scene can be viewed. Basic Details include: Date the image was captured, Resolution of the final imagery, the percentage of the AOI Coverage from the image, the amount of Cloud Cover on the image and the image Mode. In the Other Info section below, Imagery Preview and Advanced Details can be viewed by tapping either item.
Tapping Imagery Preview will display a low resolution preview of the selected image where available.
To return to the previous page, select the Back button in the upper left part of the application.
Tapping Advanced Details will display more information about the selected Image. The Advanced Details section displays the Off Nadir angle (where available), Stereo Pair availability and the Target Azimuth (where available). The Scene Corners displays the approximate corner coordinates of the scene.
To return to the previous page, tap Back in the upper left part of the application.
Tap Add to Cart at any time to include that image as part of the request to the MapMart Mobile Support Team. Tap Yes to return to the list of available images. Tap No to continue looking at the image details. Selected images will be marked with a Shopping Cart to the left.
Scenes do not need to be selected in order to request imagery from the MapMart Mobile Support Team, though it does speed the response time.
